BACKGROUND
During break in his martial arts classes at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noda City, Japan, Hatsumi-Sensei paints for his students. He paints calligraphy and pictures. His art contains advice to his students and historical influence from the nine Japanese martial traditions he is the head instructor of:
Togakure Ryu 34th Head
Gyokko Ryu 28th Head
Koto Ryu 18th Head
Shindenfudo Ryu 26th Head
Kukishin Ryu 28th Head
Takagiyoshin Ryu 17th Head
Kumogakure Ryu 14th Head
Gyokushin Ryu 21st Head
Gikan Ryu 15th Head
In February of 2009 I started photographing Hatsumi-Sensei’s art. The idea was simply to make a record of the art but the purpose of the record was undecided, until now…
Recently Sensei asked me to put the art together into a book. It will be a resource for Bujinkan students who want to learn more about the messages in Sensei’s art. It will also be a reference for artists who find his art inspirational. And it will also simply be a beautiful book!
BOOK DESIGN
Our designer, Dan Saal, is a real pro. He's an award-winning art book designer and he knows how to design beautiful books that bring the essence of topics to life. Dan’s sample layouts already look great and I look forward to working with him to finish the project.
For an idea of the quality you can expect, take a look at some of Dan's work here:
Four years of photography are done but a lot of hard work remains. Going forward, project challenges include collaboration, design and production. Fortunately, Sensei wants this book done and he is supportive. Also, our designer, Dan Saal, knows the practical aspects of book making and he will be a great help to me in production.
Your support will help fund professional design, printing, shipping... As always with Kickstarter, without your funding, this project will die. I can only accept your money if the project is fully funded. If we fail to fully fund the project, all money will be returned. But if we succeed and are fully funded by the deadline, we will produce a beautiful book. Your support is a way we can thank Sensei for all he has done for us.
***UPDATE on: THE HIDDEN LINEAGE – IN SEARCH OF THE HISTORY OF THE TOGAKURE RYU*** Many have been asking me when the Togakure Ryu history book that includes the information about Toda will be ready. Honestly, I am slightly behind schedule due to several long business trips with my day job but I still plan to be finished with the rewriting and editing by the end of May. So, if things go really well I may have copies at the end of May. But by the latest I should have everything ready in June. I am also opening a new website in conjunction with the book to promote the BKR Dojo’s new member’s only content. I will still always be writing and posting for free here on Facebook but this will be for my personal students and for those who want more in depth videos and articles along with the chance to earn rank in the BKR syllabus created by myself and approved by Hatsumi Soke and Noguchi Dai-Shihan in 2001. There will be monthly live training webinars included for members.
TOSHITSUGU TAKAMATSU TAKAMATSU SENSEI O’Sensei Takamatsu 33rd Soke of Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu – “The last living true Ninja” O’Sensei Takamatsu (as we at ABD call him) was born in the 23rd year of Meiji (10th March 1887), in Akashi, Hyogo province. His given name was Hisatsugu but he later changed the name (using the same kanji characters but different pronunciation) to Toshitsugu. O’Sensei Takamatsu was one of the greatest martial artists to ever live. He not only practiced his art …. he lived it and victoriously fought many to the death battles from challengers. He began his training at an early age. His grandfather, Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu, had a bone clinic, and a Budo Dojo in Kobe.
Hensōjutsu (変装術) was a Japanese martial art skill involving disguise, impersonation, and infiltration. In some ninja clans it was known as the "Shichi Hō De" (七方出?) or, "seven ways of going" (one form of ninjutsu that has a person play a role much like an actor does in impersonating people). A ninja had to appear either as a priest, samurai, merchant, craftsman, performer, puppeteer, or farmer.
